Eid Breakfast at Abuela's Book Review

Title: Eid Breakfast at Abuela's
Author: Mariam Saad
Illustrator: Chaymaa Sobhy
Publisher: Prolance Publishing
Recommended for: 4-6 year old

Join Sofia and her mom and dad who spend Eid - the Islamic holiday celebrating the end of Ramadan - with her Mexican grandmother, who is not Muslim but chooses to throw them a festive breakfast which includes traditional Mexican food, decorations, and activities.

The book includes many Spanish words and a glossary as well to introduce the reader to simple words in Spanish and even Arabic.

If you're looking for an Eid story to read to children then this one is a little different. This is a heartwarming story of family not just about Eid only. It's about a little Muslim girl, Sofia, who spends Eid with her parents as well as her non-Muslim grandmother and cousins. It shows how we can celebrate Eid and be with relatives who are not Muslims.

Another aspect of this story is that Sofia speaks Spanish so the story has Spanish words weaved into it. This teaches children the Spanish words for some common items such as leche and agua. There's a vocabulary list at the end of the book with the Spanish words, English and Arabic translation. It's great for introducing children to another language and another culture.

Learning a new language has many benefits especially for brain development: it helps with memory, improves academic performance, supports problem solving, and children get better at their native language. For adults, learning a new language keeps the brain active so it decreases the chances of dementia in old age. There are many more scientifically proven advantages.

The story concludes with Sofia having a great day filled with happy memories of Eid with her family and relatives. And that's a message that you'd want to leave with children.
