For weeks a dream has plagued the mind of the most powerful person on earth, the Sultan and Caliph of the Islamic Empire. Scenes of destruction and pain continue to visit him regarding a strange land, a city that he has never seen before. In his heart he knows that a strong connection exists between this hidden city and the Empire.

The Sultan entrusts the mission to a former soldier and close friend of the royal family, Adam ibn Mustafa. Over sea, deserts and mountains the reinstated soldier of the Sultan must venture to discover this city and save it from annihilation. But his journey is not an easy one as Adam must overcome natural disasters, wild beasts and a hidden enemy that seems connected somehow.

But all these trials are nothing compared to what awaits Adam at the end of his journey, a new threat or a forgotten enemy?

This book was read by my 14 year old son so this review was written by him.

The Broken Kingdom is a great story based around a unique set of characters who are well-characterised. This will make the reader feel like he is embarking on a journey with them. Great Islamic lessons can also be learnt with the characters through their unfolding stories.

The plot is captivating and the action scenes are intense. This is an interesting book because it is well-written and did not become boring. Other books become boring quickly because the pacing of the story can not be sustained and the momentum is lost. Since the story of this book is captivating, the reader will feel immersed into the story.

The ending was perfect. By the end of the book the reader will feel satisfied as all the loose ends are tied and every question is explained except for the cliffhanger. The cliffhanger is the perfect link to continue on to the following story. It makes the reader eager for the next book.

The only flaw to The Broken Kingdom is that it needs more editing for example, proper use of speech marks, grammar and commas. There are many of these mistakes, however it doesn't affect the reader's experience. Additionally, the cover design could be improved. The colour choice is not very appealing. I would recommend a more matching colour scheme of black, blue and white to represent the soldiers' uniform. Maybe replace the red and green with blue and it would look perfect.

The Broken Kingdom is recommended for teenagers and young adults. This is for those who enjoy reading intense battle scenes and love hearing an epic soldier's tale.
