If you have a soccer-mad preteen boy in your household then these two Victory Boys books are a must have.
The first thing about the book that caught my eye was the soccer ball. So I bought the book and was sure that my soccer-mad son would read it. But he looked at it and was skeptical. My son was always skeptical of many books written by Muslims. They have what he calls the cringe factor which I think means that it's formalaic and obvious. I asked him to just try reading the first few chapters to see what it's like.
And he was hooked. This was what he had to say about the books.
"It was a good book because the story line was exciting. There were lots of soccer action and suspense. You didn't know what was going to happen next. The second book was way better than the first one because there was even more action and suspense. There was a clearer moral to the story which is to work together. The characters had more emotions so it made you feel for them."
And were there any cringe moments in the book? I asked him. Only a little bit, he replied, not enough to make him cringe all the way through.
Okaaay. There you have it, straight from the mouth of a soccer mad preteen boy.
By the way, the first book is 'The Victory Boys' and the sequel is 'Team Spirit'.
