An Attitude of Gratitude

(c) Ayeina
Each day in my prekindy classes I always try to teach children about being grateful to Allah for all the things that He's given them.

When we sing the song "If You're Happy and You Know It" I always end it with, "If you're happy and you know it say, 'Alhamdulillah'" and the children would say "Alhamdulillah." (instead of clap your hands). I would reinforce it by saying, "Thank you Allah for letting us be happy. Alhamdulillah!"

When we do the calendar and look at the days, months and weather, I would ask them if the day is rainy, sunny and so on. No matter what type of weather it is, I always remind them to say, "Alhamdulillah" because whether it is raining, sunny or windy, it is a blessing from Allah.

There are so many books that we read from time to time about Allah giving us eyes to see and hands to do things with. It's a constant reminder for children to have an attitude of gratitude to our Creator. It's an attitude that I like to nurture in children so that they are always grateful.

As for parents, it's not too late for us to nurture this attitude in ourselves. If you can be grateful to Allah in everything that you have and everything that you do then Allah will grant you more: 'If you are grateful I will surely increase you.' (Qur'an 14:7).

To help you to nurture this attitude, a gratitude journal may be your answer. Each day, you can find something to be grateful for and write it down. Do this everyday for a whole month then it will become automatic, insha Allah. If you can't think of what to be grateful for then Ayeina's Gratitude Journal may help you as there are lovely watercolour pictures of thoughtful things to be grateful for.

Exclusive to ILMA Education are two full watercolour downloads from Ayeina, the author and artist of the Gratitude Journal. It's a reminder to be grateful for our babies and for learning. You can print them out, frame them and hang them up. (For personal use only.}
