Ramadan Parenting Challenge 2014 |
Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah (s) said, “Iman
has sixty odd or seventy odd branches. The uppermost of all these is the
Testimony of Faith: 'La ilaha illallah' (there is no true god except Allah)
while the least of them is the removal of harmful object from the road. And
shyness is a branch of Iman.” (Bukhari
and Muslim)
A Muslim, whether male or female, is shy. We don’t boast but we are humble and modest. This is so much in contrast to what Western society teaches us to be. My natural tendency is towards shyness but the school system subconsciously taught students to act aggressive and be forward and not self-conscious because those who are unassuming will not achieve success.
I watch the Muslim children
and I see most young girls with no shyness in them, instead, they are loud and
brash. The boys are just as affected. Where has all their shyness gone? Prophet
Muhammad (s) was so shy that it was reported by Abu Sa'id
Al-Khudri that he (s) was
even shier than a virgin behind her veil (Bukhari and Muslim).
Shyness is how you act towards Allah
and others. With Allah, you are shy to disobey Him and do anything wrong. With
people you treat them with compassion and gentleness. Shyness is a good thing.
It is the opposite of arrogance. 'Imran bin Husain reported: The Messenger of Allah (s) said,
"Shyness does not bring anything except good." Shyness is one of the
things that parents forget to instill in their children.
Challenge for today is to:
- Teach children to lower their gaze.
- Dress modestly.
- Be humble towards Allah.
- Treat others well with gentleness.
Do these and continue to do them for the remaining days of
Ramadan.
