Why Cats Make The Best Pets For Children (and Adults)

My children love animals and we have had chicken, guinea pigs, rabbits, quails and fish. We still have most of them but we have recently added a cat to our household. Of all the animals that we have, cats win hands down for the best pet. Here are the reasons why:

1. Cute and Cuddly
Although rabbits are cute and cuddly too, cats will stay still and cuddle up to you. Rabbits will try to hop away so the children find it easier to cuddle the cat.

2. Clean
They clean themselves all the time and even clean after themselves. No need to worry about drooling saliva or surprise leavings.

3. Playful
Children can play with them - just roll them a ball or hold up a string and watch them go.

4. Hunt for Rat and Mice
Our cat is still young but once we found a small dead rat near our door. Our neighbour's older cat kills larger ons regularly.

5. Eat Your Leftover Meat Scraps
If you have leftover cooked or uncooked meat and fish scraps they will eat it. (Our rabbits and chicken eat vegetable scraps and anything else goes into the compost - which is great because we hardly have any scraps). The children love feeding the cat which gives them responsibility.

6. Minimal Maintenance
As you can see, cats sleep most of the time so they don't have to be walked or bothered with much if you don't want to. All they need is to be fed and cuddled and the children can play with them whenever they want.

If you have a cat, can you think of any other reasons why they make good pets?

  1. Assalamualaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatu,

I LOVE CATS!! MashaAllah, they are such amazing animals and I am glad that you and your family have chosen to take care of one. I have two myself, a sweet old lady named Penny and a naughy little boy named Newark.
Excellent reasons for keeping a cat. Another one is that they can be good stress relievers! It is so comforting to stroke their fur!
May your new kitty and all your pets be a source of blessing for you and your family and may you have many happy years together! Ameen. (:

      Jazakillahu khayran for your dua.
They are so cute masha Allah. We're thinking of getting another one but we're not sure how they'll get on. Are they very territorial, will it be easy for them to get along/accept each other? How did you introduce yours?
Yes, that's very true - it's sooo relaxing to stroke their fur.

    2. dear sister,
YES they can be quite territorial. Even to this day my cats don't get along very well. However, we had another cat before Newark and he got along fine with Penny after a while. It depends on their personalities, but it is important to be careful when introducing them. Make sure to introduce them very slowly and gently...don't rush it. InshaAllah, I hope it goes well!! (:
